How many acres do I need to build a house?

As a general rule, you need a minimum of 3 acres if you will be served by a rural or city water district and have a private septic system. You need 5 acres if you have a private well and private septic system. However, there are other considerations for whether or not a house can be built on a particular tract. Always contact Planning and Zoning prior to purchasing a tract in the rural area to determine if a house could be built there.
