Responsibilities

The Register of Deeds is responsible for filing and recording all transactions related to real estate in Pottawatomie County. These documents include, but are not limited to:

  • Affidavits
  • Agreements
  • Assignments
  • Death certificates
  • Deeds
  • Easements
  • Military discharges
  • Mortgages
  • Oil and gas leases
  • Plats
  • Powers of attorney
  • Releases
  • Surveys

The Register of Deeds also files financing statements. These include federal and certain tax liens, mechanics liens for automobile repair and liens on fixtures attached to the land. Additionally, the Register of Deeds office became the custodian of the rural school records for the disbanded office of County Superintendent. We have student and teacher records from the early 1900s.
