Local law enforcement (Sheriff Department or City Police Department).
County contracts with local independent contractor, Ed Hamilton to capture and transport
potentially rabid animals. |
Purpose of the Program:
Prevent human (and domestic animal) exposure to the rabies virus.
Initiate control measures including quarantine of biting or bitten animals and
recommendations for post-exposure prophylaxis as needed.
Order testing of bitten animal when circumstances warrant such as action. |
Primary Responsibilty:
Investigate or provide consultation to law enforcement's investigation of animal bites.
Initiate control measures in accordance with Kansas regulations (and in consultation with KDHE
Epidemiology staff as needed). |
Secondary Responsibilty:
Capture and test a select sample of potentially rabid wild animals for surveillance in county. |
Program Eligibility: Pottawatomie County Residents. |
Fees:
Costs of capture, transport, quarantine, disposal, and testing of owned animals considered owner's responsibility.
Costs capture, transport, disposal, and testing of stray or wild animal shared by
Sheriff Dept & Health Dept.
Costs of post-exposure prophylactic treatment responsibility of victim (may defer to owner of animal). |
